Taiwan institute, U.S. lab sign MOU on energy technology

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Friday to work more closely together on energy technology.

Under the MOU, they will work to further develop photovoltaic energy, large electricity storage technology, nano materials to capture carbon dioxide, green buildings, and water-related technology.

Since 2004, the ITRI and the Berkeley Lab — a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national lab that brings science solutions to the world — have been making joint efforts to develop energy and nano technologies, said Chu Hsin-sen, the institute’s executive vice president.

The MOU will “allow closer cooperation between the two” and will include more collaborative projects, he said.

“Besides working on research and development of such technologies, we’d like to jointly make a great impact on the energy industries in the world,” he said.

Combining the LBNL’s strength in research and the ITRI’s in industry, Chu said, he is confident of seeing the development of green energy industries that will bring about huge changes worldwide over the next 30 years.

The MOU was signed at the one-day International Energy Innovation Conference and witnessed by Premier Wu Den-yih and Economics Minister Shih Yen-Shiang.
