Taiwan pushes for stricter eco building regulation

The Construction and Planning Agency of the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) recently announced it will put a stricter eco building regulation into effect on July 1 this year after revising several articles to raise eco building material content in a building to 45 per cent from current 30 per cent and the content outside the building to 10 per cent.

In addition, the agency will include all building sites on the island except individual farm houses and building sites smaller than 90.75 pings, or 299.47 square meters, in the application of aquifer-construction and planting requirements.

The agency will also enlarge the application of recycling sewage and storing rainwater requirements to cover new buildings with total floor area up to 3,025 pings, or 9,982 square meters.

Industry executives pointed out the revised regulation will benefit many of the island`s building-materials manufacturers vigorously developing eco materials, such as Taiwan Glass, Champion Group, and Hocheng Corp.

Most of the island’s construction companies welcome the regulation revision, pointing out that eco friendliness is an irresistible trend worldwide and a strict regulation can offer them a guideline to follow.
