A delegation of Taiwan environmental officials is set to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Environment being held July 16-18 in Khabarovsk, Russia.
“Taiwan will take opportunity to learn from member economies with advanced environmental protection knowledge and policy while also sharing its experience,” said Stephen Shu-hung Shen, minister of the ROC Environmental Protection Administration, July 13 before departing for the APEC event.
“Today’s environmental issues cross borders and tackling them requires international cooperation,” he added.
Citing the statistic that 37 percent of suspended particulates among air pollutants over Taiwan are from offshore, Shen said Taiwan hopes to improve regional environmental quality through bilateral talks and cooperation with other APEC economies.
The meeting of environment ministers, the first in 15 years among APEC economies, will broach issues such as preservation of biodiversity, promoting the growth of green industries and sustainable use of natural resources.
According to organizers, a conference of experts and a series of bilateral meetings will be held on the sidelines of the event.
The EPA expects talks to be challenging as the relationship between economy and environment the world over has undergone considerable change in recent years.
