Taiwan seeks more ‘green’ business opportunities in Latin America

A Taiwanese green energy delegation has held successful trade and investment promotion conferences in Mexico and Brazil that could open up export opportunities, according to Taiwan’s trade promotion body.

Some 160 people and representatives from the two countries’ energy sector and related enterprises attended the events and showed a strong interest in doing business with Taiwan, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council said in a statement.

The delegation held two day-long events in Mexico and Brazil on July 10 and 12, respectively.

Brian Lee, deputy director of the council’s Exhibition Department, said Taiwan, which values the green energy industry and manufactures quality goods, would be an excellent business partner for the two countries in the field.

Taiwan is optimistic about the prospects for Latin America’s solar market, which is expected to grow 350 percent in 2012, the council said, citing a survey by global market research company Solarbuzz.

A number of factors favor the development of the green energy sector in the two countries, according to the council.

Mexico’s newly elected president, Enrique Pena Nieto is believed to value the green energy sector, and Brazil is offering subsidies to promote the solar energy business, which may boost local sales and drive the solar energy market in Latin America, the council said.

In addition to meeting with local businesses, the Taiwanese delegation also promoted five green energy expos coming up in Taiwan and welcomed Mexican and Brazilian businesses to visit the shows.
