The business of waste in pictures

There is more to the waste industry than meets the eye.

Just how big is the waste business? Thriving businesses are emerging to cope with the 750 million tonnes of garbage produced each year, and their activities extend far beyond the waste removal most people associate with the industry.

A new infographic from on-line business resource centre BusinessDegree.net shows why the business of waste is larger than most people imagine, and why it is only going to get bigger.

For example, China’s rapidly expanding population already produces about 254 million tonnes of trash each year, and roughly 40 per cent of that is dumped illegally.

The infographic highlights the businesses needed to cope with mounting volumes of garbage, including waste collection and processing, recycling, waste-to-energy plants, composting and the re-design of consumer products to incorporate recycled materials.
