The global waste crisis: Can trash be turned to gold?

Urgent action is needed on the world’s waste crisis and its growing threat to the environment and human health. This is the call made by waste experts at the recent Global Partnership on Waste Management (GPWM) in Japan pointing out that it is mostly the low-income countries who suffer from poor waste management. The problem, they said, is also compounded by the fast-growing populations of the region, and increasing urbanization churns out more waste and puts a heavier toll on existing waste management systems.

The conference has also offered a solution: turning the waste sector into an opportunity for sustainable development. The United Nations Environment Programme’s International Environmental Technology Centre said that proper waste management has a huge business and sustainability potential particularly for the recovery and reuse of valuable resources.
