New national figures for littering rates show Western Australia (WA) and New South Wales (NSW) have more garbage lying around than the rest of the country, despite years of efforts to get the public to clean up its act.
After a two year delay, the WA state government is scheduled to implement tougher penalties on littering - particularly for hazardous waste such as glass or lit cigarettes - within a month. On average, the audit found just over nine litres of litter - comprised primarily of cigarette butts, plastic, paper, metal and glass - for every 1000 square metres.
