World Bank interested in Tangerang’s waste management

The World Bank has expressed interest in the waste management programme of Tangerang city administration, according to the vice mayor of Tangerang Arief Wismansyah.

“The waste management programme conducted by the Tangerang city administration focuses on reducing global warming…It has attracted the World Bank’s attention and we are requested to present it at the Carbon Expo in Germany,” he said here on Thursday.

Arief noted the World Bank had reviewed the waste management programme of Tangerang several times.

“The waste management programme…can potentially help develop green schools, green neighborhoods, green villages and green cities,” he said.

“It involves the use of bank composters and garbage systems in villages and conversion of waste into methane gas,” Arief noted.

The Carbon Expo is an event on global warming prevention, organised by the World Bank. It will be held this year in Germany during May 30-31.

If the Tangerang city administration makes a successful presentation, the World Bank will provide assistance amounting to US$25 million for waste management in the city.

“We expect the reward will be gained not just in money but also in technology,” Arief said.

Meanwhile, the head of creation and control section at the sanitation and landscape office of Tangerang city, Sugiharto Achmad Bagdja, said the Carbon Expo would be attended by representatives from China, Japan, Thailand, and European countries.
