Borouge enters collaboration to expand recyclate portfolio in Southeast Asia

Borouge, a leading petrochemicals company providing innovative, value creating plastic solutions, proudly announces that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Plaspulp Union Pte Ltd (Plaspulp Union) in Singapore, to advance its ambitions to become an end-to-end solutions provider of both virgin and recycled polyolefins.

This marks Borouge’s first foray into the recycling marketplace in Southeast Asia, and Borouge is expected to establish more partnerships with other recycling companies in the coming months.

With the access to Plaspulp Union’s mechanical recycling capabilities and products, Borouge will be able to further develop and commercialise new packaging application which incorporate recyclates and meet the rising demand for circular packaging to ensure greater sustainability.

“At Borouge, we believe strong collective action from the industry, regulators and the society is important to achieve a circular economy to protect the environment,” said Wim Roels, Chief Executive Officer, Borouge Pte Ltd.

“Creating added value and competitive advantage for our customers through innovation is what drives us as a company. Borouge is committed to support our customers and collaborate with our value chain partners to produce sustainably and efficiently, and contribute to developing more circular solutions that help make a positive impact today and tomorrow,” Roels added.

The company has invested in a Packaging Centre of Excellence focused on developing circular packaging solutions, and has a dedicated Circular Economy Solutions team to drive partnerships, commercialise the new applications and develop educational programmes to advocate the importance of circular economy.

Borouge has already successfully piloted the use of recyclates from Plaspulp Union in flexible packaging applications such as laminate and transport packaging, without compromising on the quality and performance of the end applications.

Youssef Taha, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at Borouge said, “With the growing demand for recyclates by brand owners, the new partnerships represent an important step forward as they enable us to further enhance our innovations and move these into commercial production. The Borouge team will continue to work with our partners to co-develop new solutions and business models that help drive the circular economy.”

Borouge has successfully created a diverse range of mono-material solutions for packaging applications for everyday use such as rice bags, food packaging, lamitubes for toothpaste packaging and pet food packaging. It has also recently introduced Bornewables™, a range of premium circular products produced by Borealis, to its customers. Borouge is also continuing to work to develop new disruptive packaging designs that enhance conventional designs and functionality to promote re0use and recycling efficiencies.

The MOU with Plaspulp Union will add to the existing partnerships Borouge has established with two other recycling companies in China to expand the volume of recyclates in its portfolio, and co-develop innovative new solutions for packaging applications.
