Two major international schools in Shanghai have recently joined the Fiber Project, a citywide program for responsible fabric recycling launched by Green Initiatives.
WISS (www.wiss.cn), the only school in Shanghai to run the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme at all age levels, provides an unbroken, world-class education to its highly international student body.
In addiction to academics, WISS directs meaningful attention to teaching children important environmental lessons, within the curriculum and through projects such as the Cambodia Sustainability Project, their on-campus activities - utilizing their organic greenhouse and herb garden - and with their endangered species garden, set up in conjunction with the SheShan Botanical Gardens.
Green Initiatives was also invited to be a part of WISS’ Development Day earlier this year, and had the opportunity to introduce our organization and the Fiber Project to a group of 200+ enthusiastic students.
Concordia (www.concordiashanghai.org), one of the “Big Three” international schools in Asia, was founded in 1998 and is a highly respected international school in Shanghai. Concordia provides an excellent education in addition to utilizing innovative techniques in sustainability, such as their geo-thermal heating system, green roofs, natural lighting and green landscaping.
Both of these schools have chosen to sponsor Green Initiatives’ Fiber Project, an important step in teaching children at a young age about the environmental impact of the clothing they wear.
The Fiber Project gives schools an opportunity to educate students about the energy and water cost of the clothing manufacturing process, as well as the ecological and chemical dangers of improper disposal methods. For students, teachers, and family members alike, the Fiber Project bins on campus provide an easy option for recycling unwanted clothing in a convenient and environmentally friendly way.
Since its launch in December 2014, the Fiber Project has been growing steadily, now having collected almost 5000 kilograms of fabric that would otherwise have been unsustainably discarded. The Fiber Project is a community-focused initiative and the first ever closed-loop clothing recycling program in China, aimed at reusing, recycling and upcycling fabric in order to limit the need for further textile production while keeping harmful waste products out of landfills.
