Improving air quality in China requires public-private partnership

Johnson Controls recently co-hosted the Smart Energy Application for Triple J Region Workshop with the U.S.-China Energy Cooperation Program (ECP), Hebei Energy Conservation and Monitoring Center, and the American National Standards Institute.

The Workshop brought together experts from public and private sectors in China and the U.S. to address urgent environmental issues faced by the largest urbanised region in Northern China, comprising Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

Johnson Controls initiated the Workshop as the co-chair of Industrial Energy Efficiency Working Group under the U.S.-China ECP, which is recognised by the presidents of China and the U.S. for its vital role in clean energy cooperation.

With heating identified as a critical area to address for significant progress to be made to improve energy efficiency and air quality in Northern China, Johnson Controls shared its insights and experience with waste heat recovery projects at the workshop.

The company highlighted how despite the compelling business and environmental case for waste heat recovery, recent implementation has slowed down because of increased caution in capital spending.

“The technology is proven and continues to get better. The payback period is less than three years on average, and in certain cases, less than two years,” David Huang, general manager of HVAC, Johnson Controls.

“With many untapped sources of waste heat from industrial sectors such as power, steel, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, non-ferrous metal and sewage treatment, it would be a pity to be held back by current challenges. Our hope is that this workshop will bring all key parties together to work through these challenges.”

In the last four years, Johnson Controls has led and participated in 20 waste heat recovery projects in Northern China and achieved remarkable success.

For example, a waste heat recovery solution at a large northeast Chinese municipal heating facility saved more than $1.2 million, while eliminating the burning of some 9,000 tons of coal in the heating season. This is equivalent to removing 4,000 passenger vehicles from the road for a year.
