Increasing sustainability with green roofs and vertical landscaping

With an uptick in the number of high rise constructions, the need for conserving the existing green spaces and creating more parks or gardens is paramount.

Early last year, France became the first country to introduce a law that requires all new commercial buildings to have solar panels or green roofs. This move may have set a precedent in modern roofing technology across the globe. Over and above the many benefits green roofs offers such as water conservation, recycling, reduction in urban heat island effect, the advantage of green roofs adding beautify and enhanced aesthetic value cannot be ignored.

While commercial and residential buildings have been making a mark with rooftop gardening, even hotels and schools have taken sizeable steps towards contributing to a sustainable green environment, with green rooftops and vertical gardens. The widespread implementation of green roofs and vertical gardens, also known as green walls provide significant economic benefits to any city.

Mr. Brad Hariharan, Regional Director, Expotrade Middle East, said, “While green roofs as a concept has gained gradual acceptance globally, there is still immense opportunity and scope for it to gather momentum here in the Middle East. The fact that green roofs and vegetated walls provide a plethora of environmental, ecological and economic benefits to the urban areas cannot be ignored.”

To promote landcscaped areas on balconies and rooftops, Dubai Municipality announced the ‘Green Roofs Initiative’ a few years back. The mandate under this initiative was that at least a third of the surface area of roofs should be green. Creating a green rooftop plays an integral role in protecting buildings from solar radiation and also helps regulate internal building temperature.

To adapt to the needs of the society, the importance of cultivating green roofs and green walls will be explored in-depth by sector specialists at the 4th Middle East Smart Landscape Summit on 25-26 April 2016 at Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa.
