Indigenous communities weather the storm by winning 7-year contracts for carbon abatement in the ERF auction

While NSW recovers from extreme weather events, indigenous communities in the Cape York region are helping to combat climate change.

In the first auction for carbon abatement under the Government’s Emission Reduction Fund (ERF), indigenous communities Olkola and Pormpuraaw have been awarded contracts for Savannah Burning projects. These carbon abatement projects allow the communities to manage their land in a way that avoids devastating bushfires that destroy habitat and vegetation and also emit high levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (CO2e).

The Olkola and Pormpuraaw projects will abate approx. 0.5 million tonnes of CO2e over the 7-year period. The ERF contracts will provide a valuable income stream, allowing the communities to implement sustainable land-management practices, while also providing much-needed local employment and helping to preserve traditional culture.

“We are very proud to help indigenous communities access carbon finance, and consequently help Australia and the world to mitigate climate change.” said Josh Harris, Manager Australian Carbon Projects of Climate Friendly.

Climate Friendly, through the Natural Carbon consortium, has set up the Savannah Burning Projects for Olkola and Pormpuraaw under the Carbon Farming Initiative.

1 in 7 of the contracts awarded in the ERF auction were developed by Climate Friendly and its partners. Other project methodologies include avoided deforestation and forest regeneration. In total, Climate Friendly’s projects will abate 3.4 million tonnes of CO2e over the 7-year contract period, making up 7% of the total abatement contracted through the first auction. This is a key milestone in Climate Friendly’s contribution to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are delighted to be supporting landowners and farmers in managing their land sustainably and balancing agricultural and environmental demands” said Freddy Sharpe, CEO of Climate Friendly.
