TÜV Rheinland and ISC Form Partnership Certifying Community-based Carbon Project

On 15 November, the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) and TÜV Rheinland announced a strategic partnership in China to jointly promote community-based carbon projects.

TÜV Rheinland and the ISC signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the Family Carbon Credit initiative, which was launched by ISC China in the fall of 2012. The initiative aims to create a market-oriented model to encourage communities and households to reduce their carbon emissions. It provides an online platform to facilitate voluntary carbon exchange between carbon credit owners and buyers. The carbon credits are attributed to the carbon reduction efforts made by families and communities. TÜV Rheinland, as a leading certification and inspection service provider, will award carbon certification before credit exchange transactions while the ISC, with its years of sustainable community development experience, will help engage communities and promote low-carbon lifestyles among ordinary citizens. Both TÜV Rheinland and the ISC are committed to making the contributions necessary to promote and support sustainable communities in China. With TÜV Rheinland’s support, the initiative will gain recognition in both the public and the private sectors.

The design of the Family Carbon Credit online platform ( www.familycarboncredit.com ) has been finalized and is ready to go live. The first community-based project has been kicked-off in Xiaolan, a city in Guangdong province with a population of three hundred thousand.
