Waste Management Forum to be supported by Dubai Municipality

Waste management has become an increasingly important feature on the social and economic policy agenda for Middle East nations.

Recent news has suggested that most of the GCC nations are taking positive footsteps towards reducing waste output from across industry sectors. On one hand, where Oman is set to launch reverse vending machines as a device to encourage recycling, Sharjah’s new smart bin initiative as an intelligent collection technology will optimise waste collection and save costs.

However, with all that is being done to reduce waste, there still seems to be an increase in waste generation in other aspects of the spectrum. A recent report in Gulf News stated that on a global scale, there is about 1.3 billion tonnes of food wasted every year; the food wastage in Dubai is nearly 38 per cent every day. With the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan, this figure can go up to nearly 55 per cent.

Keeping in mind the changing needs for waste management and to push for a greater environmental protection and ensuring accountability, Fleming Gulf returns with the 5th Annual Waste Management Middle East Forum on 27-28 October 2014 in Dubai; the forum is officially supported by the Dubai Municipality.

The conference will cover topics ranging from life cycle approach for effective waste management, source segregation and resource retrieval, changing people culture towards waste and incineration and anaerobic digestion as waste treatments amongst others.

This is the second year in a row that the Dubai Municipality lends its support to the conference. As a civic body, the Municipality has taken steps to ensure that the waste output is reduced during Ramadan. In a recent report, Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director of Waste Management Department at Dubai Municipality urged residents to reduce waste and have consequently done so as part of an awareness campaign as well. Saifaie is scheduled to inaugurate the conference in October.

The conference will also see expert speakers from Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi, Arab Urban Development Institute, ENOC, Unilever and Government of Ras Al Khaimah (Sewerage Authority / Waste Management)

The 2013 edition witnessed an impressive attendance of over 127 participants from 22 countries. “I like to attend this forum every year because there are a lot of interesting & informative topics by different speakers from different countries, which allows me to gain lot of insight & experience” stated a participant from Al Ain Municipality last year.
