The order – placed by the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor in the third quarter of the year – will power the Grand Renewable Energy Park in Ontario, which will be the biggest PV plant in Canada.
The Energy Park is part of a $5 billion investment by Samsung Renewable Energy and other partner companies. They aim to establish a clean energy cluster combining solar and wind power sources that can generate a total of 1,369 megawatts of renewable energy. Some of the first developments in the Energy Park include a 100MW PV power plant and a 150MW wind farm, said ABB.
According to this company video, the planet receives five times more solar energy than it consumes, and by using photovoltaic technology, this energy can be converted to electricity that has minimal environmental impact. It will also help address the world’s current and future energy demands.

The PV plant in the Energy Park will produce 165,000 megawatt-hours of emissions-free electricity per year, said ABB. This is enough renewable energy to power 13,750 homes in Canada. This is also equivalent to a reduction of 162,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually
The PV plant in the Energy Park, once completed in 2015, will produce 165,000 megawatt-hours of emissions-free electricity per year, said ABB. This is enough renewable energy to power 13,750 homes in Canada. This is also equivalent to a reduction of 162,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
This PV capacity adds to the 267MW installed last year in Ontario, which is a 70 per cent increase from 2011.
For this upcoming power plant, ABB will be providing a balance of system (BOS) solution composed of a wide range of power and automation products, such as the Symphony Plus, ABB’s flagship automation platform for conventional power generation and renewable applications. The company will also be responsible for the engineering, electrical installation, commissioning, and performance testing of the PV plant.
“Our range of solar product and system offerings combined with an extensive track record in efficiently executing optimized utility-scale PV plants around the world will enable us to deliver a best-in-class solution to our customer,” said Ulrich Spiesshofer, ABB chief executive officer.
The company will also work with Ontario-based Bondfield Construction for the civil and mechanical installation works.
Spiesshofer added: “We are delighted to work with Canadian Solar Solutions on the country’s largest solar PV plant and to support Samsung’s visionary renewable energy initiative.”
