A way forward for Desertec

The massive renewable energy project Desertec, which was conceived as a way to generate vast amounts of solar and wind energy in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East for export to Europe, needs to prove itself, says Desertec board members. With an estimated cost of more than $500 billion, the project has hit difficulties recently with two major partners - Siemens and Bosch- dropping out. With critics saying the project is too difficult politically and economically, Desertec Foundation director Thiemo Gropp said a series of five to 10 pilot schemes would help prove the viability of the plan.
