CEPD targets plant factories for promotion

Taiwan’s plant factories are set for additional promotion as part of a Council of Economic Planning and Development drive to sharpen the competitiveness of the local agricultural industry.

“Climate change triggered by global warming highlights the rising incidence of food shortages worldwide and need for environmentally controlled agricultural production,” a CEPD official said.

“Taiwan’s successful experiences in hydroponics and indoor agriculture have laid a solid foundation for the country to promote its successful plant factory model at home and abroad.”

But several obstacles need to be overcome if this form of production is to fulfill its potential in Taiwan, the official said, adding that these include a small domestic market, high production costs and shortage of experienced and skilled workers.
