HCM City to complete sanitation

The second phase of the HCM City Environmental Sanitation Project is expected to cost about US$470 million, according to the HCM City Steering Centre for Flood Control.

The centre on Monday reported on the feasibility study of the project’s second phase to a World Bank working group.

At least $450 million of the total costs for the second phase will come from Official Development Assistance loans from the World Bank, and the remaining amount from local capital.

The second phase, which will be implemented from 2015 to 2019, will complete the task of collection and treatment of wastewater in the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal basin and District 2.

Construction will begin on an eight-kilometre-long culvert system in the canal, extending from Bo Dong well in Binh Thanh District to a wastewater treatment plant in Thanh My Loi Ward in District 2.

The culvert system will transport wastewater from the canal to the wastewater treatment plant in District 2. The plant will be built with a capacity of 480,000 cu.m a day.

The first phase of the project began in 1993 in districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan and Tan Binh, and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of this year.

A culvert system with a diameter of 2.5-3 metres, as well as a 64,000 cu.m per-hour wastewater pumping station, have already been built.

An upgrade of the water-drainage system and construction of new infrastructure, including expansion of roads along the canal’s banks, have been completed.

In addition, the canal has been dredged, trees have been planted, and a new lighting system has been installed.

More than 7,000 families along the canal have been relocated during the project’s first phase.

The project aims to resolve flooding problems in a 33 sq. km-area in the basin of Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal, which runs through seven city districts.

The aim is to improve the environment as well as the living conditions of residents whose homes are along the canal.
