The Minister of Industry has held talk with the visiting Japanese Environment Minister on the possibility of Thailand using modern waste-to-energy incinerators and other waste management techniques to get rid of its garbage.
Minister of Industry Chakramon Phasukavanich held a discussion with Japanese State Minister of the Environment Yasuhiro Ozato and his delegation on the occasion of the latter’s official visit to Thailand. The two sides exchanged views on technology transfer from Japan and cooperation in industrial waste management focusing on the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principles.
The Minister of Industry revealed that Thailand had been studying the Japanese experience in industrial waste management as both countries share the same problem of limited space.
One of the techniques Thailand is interested in is an incinerator which burns about 500 tons of garbage daily to produce 10 megawatt of electricity each day. The construction of such a facility will cost about 1.8 billion baht, and the Industry Ministry is looking for a suitable site for the project.
Construction of the plant is expected to commence next year.
The Minister of Industry said further that the ministry was expediting the amendment of laws and regulations related to waste management, such as the waste production area and responsible agencies, the definition of community garbage, and laws related to the industrial wastes, to facilitate a waste management scheme.
The minister also mentioned that investors’ confidence in the Thai industrial sector is still stable as usual.
