A sum of RM10.65 million has been allocated for the first phase of a project to channel water from Batang Baram river to two treatment plants to boost the supply of treated water here.
Sarawak Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin said today that the first phase of the 10th Malaysia Plan project involved the construction of a 6.6km pipeline from the river to the plants in Sungai Liku and Bakong.
Speaking to reporters after the ministry’s meet-the-clients session, he said that another project being carried out in Miri is the RM20 million central sludge treatment plant in Tudan, about 20km from the city.
Chin, who is MP for Miri, said the project, due to be completed by this June, would replace individual septic tanks with an improved sewage treatment system.
He also said that the more than 17,000 high sodium bulbs lighting up the city streets would be replaced with the cost and energy-saving light emitting diode bulbs.
