UniMAP, German firm GetSol to develop solar technology on rooftops

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) will develop solar technology on the rooftop of its main campus buildings in Pauh Putra, near here, to boost research and learning activities related to renewable energy technology.

UniMAP vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Kamarudin Hussin said the project, known as 3.2 MW Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic Rooftop Power Generation for Feed-in Tariff (FIT), was in line with the government’s policy to encourage the use of green technology.

Speaking to reporters after signing the memorandum of agreement between UniMAP, GetSol Sdn Bhd (GetSol) and UniMAP Holdings Sdn Bhd in Pauh Putra Wednesday, Kamarudin said the provision of the photovoltaic (PV) panel system would commence as soon as possible.

Without mentioning the cost of the project, he said that apart from boosting research and learning activities, Germany-based GetSol would also share its expertise with UniMAP to produce skilled human capital.

“This shows the university’s commitment to supporting the government’s policy of encouraging the use of green technology.”

He said the project, which was a landmark cooperation between UniMAP and GetSol, a company which carried the slogan of ‘Harvest The Sun’ in promoting solar technology would start on the campus rooftop before developing it on land.

Kamarudin said the university had applied to the Department of Land and Mines to use its land of about 566 hectares in the Pauh Putra campus and Sungai Chuchoh campus to develop the technology.

UniMap would make Perlis the state for solar studies if the technology could be developed extensively and implemented on the ground besides rooftops, he said.
