Marina Bay Sands takes leadership position in sustainable practices

In an EarthCheck first, the entire operations at Marina Bay Sands has been certified silver after passing stringent benchmarking of its sustainability practices.

The iconic integrated resort in Singapore tracked and submitted the resource consumption, including water use and waste production, of its key facilities during the benchmarking process. These facilities included a 2561-room hotel, 120,000 square metre convention centre, 74,000 square metres of retail space, a museum, two large theatres and over 60 restaurants and dining establishments.

No other integrated resort of this scale and complexity has previously been benchmarked and audited by EarthCheck, the world’s leading sustainability and benchmarking organisation with members across more than 70 countries.

Mr. Stewart Moore, CEO and founder of EarthCheck, recognised that Marina Bay Sands was taking a significant leadership position by addressing sustainability in all aspects of its operations.

“Marina Bay Sands is the first integrated resort in the world to benchmark and certify its entire portfolio through the EarthCheck program. In doing so, it is measuring its performance against best practices through EarthCheck programs and making positive changes to reduce its environmental and social impact,” said Mr Moore.

Marina Bay Sands first joined EarthCheck in May 2012 in order to have a scientific approach to benchmarking its sustainability work based on the internationally recognized standard. It has since ramped up its green measures through Sands Eco360°; a global sustainability strategy that crosses all of Las Vegas Sands’ businesses. The program integrates the company’s best practices, technologies and methodologies in the area of sustainability across all properties.

Mr. Kevin Teng, Director of Sustainability for Marina Bay Sands said, “In two years with EarthCheck, we have already saved enough water to fill 66 Olympic-sized swimming pools.”

“Ensuring sustainability is an integral part of our daily operations and we take an active and long term approach towards reducing our impact on the environment. Achieving the EarthCheck Silver Certification speaks volumes of our commitment towards building a green culture at Marina Bay Sands and influencing our partners and visitors to do the same.”

As part of certifying with EarthCheck, Marina Bay Sands ensured that all artifacts, souvenirs and products offered for sale and consumption did not include any protected species or species of conservation concern.

One of its latest initiatives is to remove shark fin from the restaurants it owns and operates. Shark fin dishes are also no longer offered at MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions) events at Sands Expo and Convention Centre.
