Carbon management tool pilot launches in S’pore

The CarbonNeutral company is piloting a web-based carbon management programme which will involve real-time reporting of carbon emissions by six Singapore-based organisations.

The firm, a provider of carbon reductions solutions, said in a statement that it will pilot an innovative web-based carbon management solution where six leading organisations will measure and manage their carbon emissions online.

This will allow them to develop carbon reduction programmes that will reduce costs, build a strong environmental position and prepare them for future regulations.

The pilot is supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

The solution combines CarbonView, a web-based carbon management tool software, developed by international supply chain consultancy Viewlocity, with the carbon reductions expertise of The CarbonNeutral Company.

This initiative will allow for the use of internationally-approved methodologies, to be used by all industry sectors, to produce a robust and uniform baseline measurement of greenhouse gas emissions in Singapore.

The organisations who’ve signed up are local green property developer City Developments, law firm WongPartnership LLP, Jebsen & Jessen (SEA), Pan-United Concrete, Drydocks World – Singapore and the National University of Singapore.

CarbonNeutral said it would work closely with these organisations to help them measure their carbon footprints and then develop offset inclusive carbon reduction strategies.

Its managing director of Asia Pacific, Rani Virdee, said: “Our experience shows us that organisations that implement carbon reduction programmes with stretching targets will benefit from reducing operational costs, winning more business and enhancing their corporate reputation.

These six innovative organisations have the unique opportunity to lead Singapore businesses.”

EDB’s director for cleantech and urban solutions Goh Chee Kiong noted that as a small and highly urbanised city state, Singapore needs carbon management as a key capability to enhance its competitiveness in a carbon-constrained global economy.

“As rapid urbanisation takes place around the world, cities are starting to face challenges similar to those of Singapore; this innovative carbon management pilot not only has the potential to address Singapore’s emissions reduction needs but can also be scaled up for use in other cities and countries as a methodology to reducing emissions,” said Mr Goh.

The Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore yesterday welcomed the launch of the pilot.
Its executive director Kavita Gandhi said: “This tool will enable small, medium and large organisations to become more competitive as they measure and reduce their carbon emissions.”
