Constituent Assembly (CA) members from the Far-west region have demanded that the Mahakali river water and power generated from it should be equally shared between Nepal and India.
Speaking at an interaction organised by the Local Development Forum and the Mahakali River Border Concerned Group, Kanchanpur on Sunday, they said Nepal should get half the water and the power generated from the Mahakali River.
The CA members said Nepal was discriminated against as 97 per cent of the water in this border river was diverted towards India for irrigation purposes.
They complained that the Nepali land was becoming parched and suffering desertification as almost all water in the Mahakali River was diverted towards India.
CA member Lekhraj Bhatta said Nepal was in loss as it is deprived of equal share in the water and power from the Mahakali River. He said the agriculture in the region could be boosted if the water from the river could be tapped to irrigate farmlands up to Kailali district in the plains.
Similarly, CA members Laxman Datta Joshi, Tekendra Prasad Bhatta, Harka Bahadur Singh and Ramesh Lekhak called for the development of the West Seti Hydroelectricity Project and the Pancheshwar Multi-purpose Project and equal sharing of the Mahakali River.
