Indonesia is committed to being a proactive part of a global solution to climate change, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa has said.
Marty made the statement at the general debate of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday, September 26, 2011.
“Through the REDD+ program, we are using our natural rain forests as an important part of our mitigation efforts,” Marty said.
“Our commitment to work in partnership in addressing climate change must not founder in the face of the looming and renewed threat of global financial and economic crisis,” he added.
In the face of that challenge, Marty said bold measures must be taken and the reform of international financial and economic governance must be expedited.
“Enhanced coordination of national economic policies is essential. We must learn to step out of our comfort zone and address these critical needs in concert,” he noted.
As the emerging economies now serve as important engines of global economic growth, the Indonesian foreign affairs minister pointed out that they should have greater opportunity to contribute in promoting solutions.
“The challenges confronting us are persistent and formidable, but we have the opportunity and the capacity to address them, and most of all, to turn challenges into opportunities,” he said.
For a start, since these challenges defy national solutions, Marty said they could at the same time motivate countries to establish partnership and cooperation.
