Masdar-owned Shams 1 solar project to rise in the Middle East

The largest solar project in the Middle East is scheduled for completion at the end of the year. The commissioning of the 100MW Shams 1 solar project in the United Arab Emirates is a significant undertaking for the oil-rich region with its proponents saying it is the surest sign that solar power is coming to the Middle East in a big way. Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, UAE’s Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change and the chief executive of Masdar, said while they do not need complimentary sources of power, they want to be a technology player for solar power. The government-funded Masdar City in Abu Dhabi is the majority investor in the Shams 1 solar project.
