Poland’s bid for COP19 questioned

Environmentalists are dismayed over the announcement that coal-dependent Poland will host the UN climate talks in 2013 following the staging of the talks in OPEC-member Qatar this year. They point out that both countries have resisted actions to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Poland, they said, has led opposition to EU plans to curb carbon pollution permits. But UNFCCC chief Christiana Figueres said that the UN conference actually brings the world’s attention to the host country, pushing it to scale up actions to fight climate change.
