Korea and China have agreed to inform each other immediately and strengthen cooperation if an accident occurs at any of the nuclear power plants in the two countries. Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao reached the agreement in Beijing on Wednesday.
A spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office said the recent Japanese nuclear disaster “has prompted the two prime ministers to seek ways to strengthen nuclear safety cooperation, including joint efforts to exchange information and prevent the spread of radiation in an emergency.”
Kim also asked China to support Korea’s bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2018 and the 18th UN Climate Change Conference next year. He invited Chinese President Hu Jintao to visit Korea around the time of the second Nuclear Security Summit scheduled for next spring in Seoul.
