A Taiwanese policymaker may call for a nation-wide referendum on a nuclear-free Taiwan to rid the country of nuclear power plants that he deems unnecessary. Currently 17 per cent of Taiwan’s electricity is generated by six reactors at three nuclear plants, and a fourth is under construction.
DPP Legislator Kao Jyh-peng called the fourth plant a “black hole” and a “slap-dash job”, noting that it has gone way over-budget and has been listed by the World Nuclear Association as the world’s 14th most dangerous nuclear plant.
Taiwan’s President Ma had previously said that the Longmen plant would only go ahead if safety concerns were addressed. An independent oversight committe had found about 40 design, construction and maintenance flaws in the plant, which is being built by the state-run Taipower.
