Nature-based solutions in Indonesia: the power of nature

Nature-based solutions in Indonesia: the power of nature

Amid the urgent call for global action to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, experts have highlighted the power of nature - nature-based solutions (NbS), to help countries meet their climate goals, with the IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services estimating that nature-based solutions can provide 37% of the mitigation needed until 2030 to achieve the targets of the Paris Agreement.

Indonesia’s NbS potential of 1.4 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent (GtCO2e) per year, approximately 20% of the global potential for NbS, makes the country a leader in this field. This provides significant carbon solutions if properly managed and scaled quickly enough to support global goals. However, even with estimates by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) that Indonesia’s voluntary carbon credit market could achieve a value of USD$4-6 billion by 2030, there still remains a lack of knowledge on NbS and hence, implementation of NbS initiatives.

What are the opportunities for Indonesia, if it successfully scales NbS across the country? What are the barriers for accelerating NbS across Indonesia? What are the solutions to the difficulties that stakeholders face in tapping into this potential? How can the best ways be found to synergise stakeholders’ interests, both horizontally and vertically?

On 4 August 2022, Eco-Business in partnership with Givaudan will convene the leading thinkers and decision makers for a public discussion on the power of nature and pathways to establish Indonesia as a global leader in NbS implementation.
