Singapore has reached a milestone in its green journey with the Pasir Ris Sports and Recreation Centre.
The new sports centre is the 1,000th certified “green” building in the country.
It’s 25 per cent more energy-efficient than an average building without green features.
Solar panels on its rooftop are expected to save the centre S$57,000 a year.
Another interesting feature is an exercise bicycle in the gym.
It can store the energy generated by users to power up the gym television for up to eight hours.
Deputy Prime Minister and MP for Pasir-Ris Punggol Mr Teo Chee Hean said the effort is important because the building sector contributes 16 per cent of Singapore’s total carbon emissions.
He told reporters the sunshading screens on the sports centre’s facade also uses recycled wood, with a history.
He said: “I like the fact it has brought back some of the things from the old National Stadium.
“I have a lot of fond memories of the old National Stadium, and the wood panels coming from the seats has a very nice touch, has a link to past, link to sports, and it’s also a very good way of re-using old materials.”
