Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim announced a push to achieve a national target of having 80 per cent of buildings here equipped with more energy efficient features by 2030.
SOME 20,000 working professionals in the building industry as well as polytechnic and university students will be trained over the next 10 years to learn the nuts and bolts of how to green buildings here.
The announcement, made by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim on Monday, is the latest push to achieve a national target of having 80 per cent of buildings here equipped with more energy efficient features by 2030.
Although Singapore has identified greener buildings as key to a more energy conscious economy, most buildings have so far been found lacking, said Dr Yaacob.
He was speaking at a ceremony to launch the inaugural World Green Building Council International Congress on Monday at the Marina Bay Sands.
And to give the nascent industry a push, the Building and Construction Authority will also roll out a new award later this year to recognise outstanding performers in the building and construction sectors.
