60 regencies, municipalities join green city program

The Public Works Ministry is set to initiate development of green areas in 60 Indonesian regencies and municipalities next year as part of its efforts to address climate change.

“Sixty of 150 regencies and municipalities having spatial planning bylaws have confirmed their commitment to [our] green program,” ministry director general for spatial planning Imam Santoso Ernawi said in Makassar on Sunday evening.

Imam said he had asked the 60 regencies and municipalities to begin drafting their green action plans, which should be ready for implementation next year.

The Public Works Ministry would facilitate implementation of the action plans, he added.

Budi Yuwono, the ministry’s Cipta Karya director general, said there were no Indonesian cities thus far that could be considered “green”.

“We therefore continue to push for the development of green cities and their sustainable growth. We should comprehensively plan city development to serve the present and future needs of residents,” Budi said, as quoted by Antara.
