Smart gas meters may soon be rolled out for the residents of Shanghai. The move is a bid to encourage use of natural gas and to ensure the safety of its use. At present, some 300,000 households in the city already have smart meters that automatically send gas readings to their service providers, but city officials are looking to increase this number. For one, they say, the smart meters could protect residents from gas leaks as it automatically alerts gas companies. The installation of smart meters is also a part of the green energy programme of the city to promote the use of natural gas around Shanghai.
Some city residents, however, have apprehensions about its use, citing doubts about the accuracy of its readings.
