B1.55bn slated for green equipment

The government has earmarked 1.55 billion baht in grants and soft loans for businesses that agree to participate in an energy-saving and production efficiency enhancement programme.

Twarath Sutabutr, deputy director-general of the Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Department, said several thousand small and medium-sized enterprises with flood-damaged machinery and equipment can replace them with more efficient units.

The money has been allocated largely from the Energy Conservation Fund.

Machinery and other equipment used in production such as motors, chillers and boilers are the main target of the campaign, as they consume huge volumes of energy.

Director-general Krairit Nilkuha said the department will have experts examine the damaged machinery and equipment.

“We must encourage them to change out their equipment for the sake of energy-saving and efficiency,” he said.

“This will change crisis into an opportunity to save on production costs.”

As well, 550 million baht of the total is slated for flood-damaged state agencies that agree to convert to energy-saving or green buildings.
