Several major car makers including Audi, BMW, Daimler Porsche and Volkswagen have presented a joint charging system for electric vehicles built in close cooperation with Ford and General Motors (GM), it has been announced.

The universal charging system needs only a single charging interface in the vehicle, allowing the customer to charge with all existing charging methods: one-phase AC-charging, fast three-phase AC-charging, DC-charging at home or ultra-fast DC-charging at public charging stations, the car makers said.

The unified charging system will lead to cost reduction and boost the electro-mobility sector on a global level, the manufacturers said in a statement.

The Combined Charging System will be ready for deployment by the middle of next year and then be introduced to the market.
