Cuban former president Fidel Castro said he is worried about the deterioration of the environment but optimistic on “rational bases” , adding that there is a solution “if the people on the planet is sensitized.”
“I am concerned about the future, but I also believe increasingly that the solution is within our grasp, if we manage to get the truth to a sufficient number of people among the billions who inhabit the planet,” said the Cuban leader in his article published by the official site Cubadebate.
Castro cited as examples the forest fires in Russia, the floods in Pakistan and the huge icebergs breaking off in Greenland.
“Everything is a result of the alteration of natural conditions, caused by the human beings themselves,” added Fidel.
“But I am optimistic on rational and solid basis,” he said. “Some are concerned. I, however, I am calm.”
Cuba is one of the countries more prepared to face natural obstacles, he said.
Since Castro left the presidency four year ago he has written over 300 articles on the world most important issues specially the climate change.
Cuba has a recognized Civil Defense system and holds annually a national exercise aimed to tackle forest fires, hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis.
