China a new hub for urban planning know-how

China’s rapid economic growth is putting unprecedented pressure on its urban planners to design cities that can accommodate the growing influx of people from the provinces. One consequence of this development is that much of the world’s city masterplanning expertise is now moving from West to the East.

Estimates show that China will have 221 cities with more than 1 million people in just over a decade from now – a huge difference with Europe’s 35 cities and United States’ 10 cities. The challenge now for city planners is to provide housing, infrastructure and mass transit systems to the growing urban centers, and to do so without environmental harm.
