The HCM City Anti-Flooding Programme Management Centre has said it hopes to stop flooding in all 31 flood-prone areas in the city by the end of 2014.
Anti-flooding work has been or would be carried out at 10 places this year, eight others next year, and the rest in 2014, it said.
So far this year it has worked on six flood-prone areas – Vu Tung Street and Ung Van Khiem Streets in Binh Thanh District, Lanh Binh Thang in District 11, Hau Giang Street in District 6, Do Xuan Hop in District 9, and Quang Trung Street in Go Vap District.
It is developing a project for four other areas this year: Go Dua Street in Thu Duc District, National Highway 1A in District 12, An Duong Vuong Street in Districts 6 and Binh Tan, and Phan Anh Street in District 6.
But the 31 inundation-prone areas it hopes to fix by 2014 include 14 where remedial work was already done but has proven ineffective.
They include six severely flooded areas – Au Co, Bau Cat, Dong Den, Truong Cong Dinh, Hoa Binh, and Ba Hom Streets.
The other eight are No Trang Long, Nguyen Xi, Phu Tho Hoa, Le Thuc Hoach, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh, Phan Dinh Phung, Truong Vinh Ky, and Tan Quy Streets.
Nguyen Huu Tin, deputy chairman of the city People’s Committee, has ordered the centre and other relevant agencies to improve the quality of their works to prevent any further recurrence of floods.
The project contractors would have to be held accountable in case of recurrence, he said.
The floods mostly occur due to high tides in the rivers and canals that crisscross the city.
