An investigation into a truck accident that damaged a hydroelectric dam and killed one worker in Vietnam’s Central Highlands revealed shoddy workmanship and multiple violations of construction and operating regulations. Contractors did not use cement to build the Dak Mek 3 dam’s core as called for in the design, but rather a mix of earth, sand and stone. Local press have questioned whether or not local officials tried to cover up the incident, after they took four days to report it. The US$10 million project, scheduled for completion in 2013, will have a capacity of 7.5 MW.
