Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said he was worried about the high price tag of Jakarta’s proposed mass transit system. Still reeling from the costs of its upgraded bus system, Jakarta has obtained financing promises from the central government and the Japan International Corporation Agency for a 110+ kilometre system that will cost US$104 million per kilometre to build. Experts say that Jakarta needs to cater to the city’s non-drivers and ease traffic congestion. They add that Jakarta is the largest city in the world without a mass rapid transit system. Joko has not yet given final approval.
