Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim claims contractors appointed to the ongoing work at the Langat 2 water treatment plant aroused doubts.
“We need to know if these contractors were appointed via an open tender process and whether or not they are capable of doing the job because the higher the cost of building the plant, the more consumers will have to pay for water tariff.
“We do not want the people of Selangor to suffer by paying more for water tariff,” he said after chairing the weekly exco meeting yesterday.
Asked if these contractors could be linked to any Barisan Nasional party members, Syabas or Puncak Niaga, he said the onus was on the public to check once the names were announced.
“I will make available the list of contractors by June 12 before a water forum. You can check from there and see who the contractors are,” he added.
Khalid said there were three sectors where contracts were awarded in building the project constructing tunnels, dams and pipes.
He then reiterated the state government’s stand to restructure the water industry in Selangor, saying that it was the only way to solve the water issue here.
“We have enough (water) treatment plants and more than enough supply of raw water. The issue here is treated water.
“Currently, consumers are only getting 70 per cent of the treated water. If the non-revenue water (NRW) can be reduced to 15 per cent, it should not be a problem,” he said.
Khalid claimed that if the restructuring plan did not take place, consumers might see water tariffs surge up to more than 70 per cent.
