E.ON Climate & Renewables (EC&R) and Bionersis have started operations on their largest Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project in South-East Asia. The project has capped the Nam Son landfill site near Hanoi, Vietnam, and installed biogas recovery and flaring equipment to destroy harmful greenhouse gases produced by the site.
The Nam Son landfill site serves Hanoi’s 3.5 million inhabitants and receives 3,000 tones of domestic waste a day. Waste in landfill sites produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. By capturing and flaring the methane gas, E.ON and Bionersis can significantly reduce the impact of the Nam Son site on the environment.
With a total investment of EUR6.6 million, the project is expected to abate the equivalent of 4.5 million tons of carbon over the next 20 years. A second phase of the project shall include the installation of biogas energy valorization units with the capacity to generate 5 megawatts of electricity.

By itself, Nam Son project represents CERs production equivalent to the first seven projects developed by Bionersis and a 40 percent increase of the total estimated CERs reserve of our projects in operation. We are then very satisfied with our partnership with E.ON which brought resources needed to accelerate our Asian development and move on larger projects”.
Registration of the project with the UNFCCC was completed in a record time on October 16, 2010, less than ten months following Bionersis taking over the consortium owning biogas rights for the landfill.
This is the second project E.ON and Bionersis have collaborated on in South Asia and the partners intend to accelerate their efforts to jointly develop CDM projects in Asia. The first project KPS near Bangkok in Thailand had also received the CDM registration last year and has started operations earlier this year.
