Electric vehicles charged by stream energy

A system generating electricity using the flow of a small stream to charge electric vehicles (EVs) started operation on March 9.

This is part of Maebashi City’s efforts to mitigate global warming, and Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. is acting as a technical advisor. This is the first system of this type built in Japan.

Maebashi City is located about 100 km northwest of Tokyo. The city has installed a 0.5 kW small hydroelectric generator on a stream that flows by an elementary school, in order to create a system to provide electricity for an EV charging system. The system can be now used for free.

A ceremony was held on March 9 and students from the school where the system is installed attended.
