EU rubberstamps harmonise eco-labelling for heaters

The heat pump industry has welcomed an EU decision to introduce technologically-neutral energy labels for heater technologies, which will allow consumers to compare gas boilers with renewable generators.

The EU’s College of Commissioners formally adopted proposed rules last week, which are designed to help drive down emissions from the domestic heating sector.

Refrigerant industry association EPPE has consistently argued that having a single energy label for all types of heaters would demonstrate the advantages of using heat pumps and encourage companies to produce more energy efficient gas and oil boilers.

According to the EU, the new regulations are designed to help consumers make a more informed choice about their purchases, taking account of the running costs, as well as the initial price.
