EU suspends airline emissions scheme

The European Commission has halted its controversial aviation emissions scheme for a one-year period for international flights to spur rapid action from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Aviation emissions from airplanes flying in and out of EU airspace have been subject to the EU’s emissions trading scheme since the beginning of this year, prompting protests from China, India, the United States and others. However, EU representatives have maintained that it would back down from the plan if a comparable global mechanism was implemented. Airlines will again be subject to the ETS if the ICAO cannot make substantial progress within a year.
