Fishers weigh in on Australia’s new marine park

Small businesses and the local seafood industry of Australia are seen to suffer the consequences of Australia’s recent creation of the world’s largest network of marine parks. The commercial fishing industry and the opposition said the $100 million adjustment assistance package for the affected fishers will not be enough as compensation. Under the marine parks plan, Australia will have to increase its imports of seafood. The opposition said while they support environmental protection, its implementation should not be at the expense of the livelihoods of the people who make their living from the sea.
