General Motors India showcased the electric version of its small car, ‘Beat’, as part of a global demonstration of the technology.
GM had tied up with Reva Car Company in 2009 and developed the e-Spark using their battery technology, but Reva’s acquisition by Mahindra and Mahindra last year meant, the car could not be released.
“This car demonstrates our technological prowess and reaffirms our commitment to the environment,” said Karl Slym, president and managing director, GM India while showcasing the electric Beat. “We have no plans of launching this car in the market yet but we are delighted that Chevrolet selected India as an important market to test the battery electric technology, while recognizing our capabilities to help identify ways to make this technology more affordable.”
The electric Beat is powered by a 300cell, 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack and the battery can power the Beat for at least 81miles under normal driving conditions. It uses a single speed drive unit and an electric motor that produces power at approximately 45kW.
GM said that this demonstration project is the latest example of its commitment to be a leader in the development of vehicle electrification technologies. The company will also stage similar demonstration programs in Korea, China and Germany.
