Gov’t promises subsidies for buyers of electric cars

The government plans to give subsidies to people who buy electric cars, an official said Thursday.

Park Kyung-chul of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said, “We’ll decide in the latter half of this year how much subsidies we’ll give to private citizens who buy electric cars.” He made the announcement at a seminar on green car technology at the Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.

So far only government offices or public agencies have benefited from subsidies of W5.78 million (US$1=W1,089) for each low-speed electric vehicle that can run up to 60 km/h, W17.2 million for a small high-speed electric vehicle with fewer than four seats and W19.4 million per midsize high-speed electric car.
